Other Things

I like to try new things. I try to try at least a couple new things each year. After all, you never know what the next thing you love will be. Here are some of the things I've picked up and stuck with in recent years. Because if there's one thing you came to this website to read about, it's the random things I do in my spare time.

In Spring of 2014, I learned how to SCUBA dive. It was important to me that I get certified as a diver before July because I have a friend who's a diver, and her birthday is just a few days away from mine, and I wanted to suggest that we go on a diving trip to celebrate our respective birthdays in 2015. That trip didn't happen, but I did get to dive in Belize, which is where those diving pictures came from.

In Summer of 2014, I started playing a video game called Spelunky, which is a 2d platformer similar to the Mario games, except you descend through multiple levels before ultimately defeating the lord of the underworld, ideally by throwing an eggplant at him. In January 2016, I represented Spelunky at Awesome Games Done Quick (embedded below), for charity. I am currently taking a break from the game, but as of writing this page I am ranked the 36th best player in the world.

In 2016 I started designing a card game. I'm still working on it, and it promises to be really fun once it's ready for testing.

My plans for 2017 included rock climbing and learning to ride a horse. Neither of these things happened due in part to a back injury I suffered in the gym in November 2016, because I did something dumb. I'm better now. I'm also getting back into chess. I'm not very good at it.

At some point during the Covid-19 pandemic I started creating sudoku puzzles. It turns out I'm quite good at that. But not chess. Some day...
