The Nature Of Picasso

"Hey."

"Yeah?"

"You ever wonder why we're here?"

"What're you, Picasso? Shut up."

"What does Picasso have to do with anything?"

"You know, Picasso; the philosopher."

"Picasso wasn't a philosopher."

"What, just because you don't agree with what he has to say his teachings don't matter?"

"No, I mean he wasn't a philosopher; he was a painter."

"Right; that's how he philosophized."

"I have no idea what you're talking about right now."

"Think about it: could you pick out a Picasso painting from a row of paintings?"

"Probably; he painted like shit."

"It was cubism. He painted things the way we don't like looking at them: as all sharp and jagged, rather than with smooth lines and edges and curves. That's philosophy."

"That's cubism. And I'm pretty sure it was because he was diseased, actually, and that's just how he saw things."

"What, so now you're saying that viewing the world differently than you do is a disease? That's racist, dude."

"How is it racism?"

"You're grouping an entire set of people under one banner, one set of expectations, just because of how they think. That's racism."

"Free-thinking isn't a race."

"See, that's exactly what I'm talking about! That's not cool dude."

"No, I mean racism is against blacks, or hispanics, or even white people; it's based on skin colour or religion, not clarity of thought."

"Picasso."

"What about him?"

"You can't deny that his paintings are a statement."

"I can deny that, and I do. His paintings aren't a metaphor or a psychological analysis, they're a man drawing things on canvas; nothing more."

"Painting is a form of rebellion. Why do you think graffiti artists do it?"

"You're comparing Picasso to a graffiti artist?"

"No, I'm saying they both used art to express themselves and their own unique viewpoint. Picasso used brushes and a canvas to demonstrate how the world is not as easy to live in as we like to think it is, and graffiti artists use spray cans and walls to demonstrate that no matter how much we try to convince ourselves otherwise, ultimately we can't control our environment, because we can't even control ourselves."

"That's... an oddly lucid thought coming from you."

"Thank you. I think."

"You've been thinking about this a lot."

"Not really."

"So you can discourse on the moral and ethical similarities between one of the most famous painters who ever lived and a youth who's expressing himself in the only way he knows how, but you don't know the definition of racism?"

"Apparently."

"At least you can admit it."

"I admit nothing."
