It's All About Perspective

"So, how are you coping?"

"With what?"

"Quarantine."

"Oh. It's okay."

"How is it okay? I've been itching to go somewhere for four days now."

"Itching to go where?"

"Anywhere. Literally anywhere that isn't my apartment."

"What have you been doing?"

"Reading. Watching TV shows. Not cutting myself just to feel something."

"It must be hard going from a life where you're out and about all the time to one where you're stuck at home."

"Are you not having any difficulty with this?"

"I mean, I was already working from home and barely going out. Very little has changed for me. There's more people using the internet than usual, so I guess YouTube and Twitch are a bit slower."

"And you're not going stir crazy? Like, at all?"

"No. Like I said, I've been living basically this life for years already. This is just more of the same for me. It's really hard for me to relate to most people about this, because my experience has been so different from theirs."

"How do you keep from being overwhelmed by loneliness?"

"Oh that's easy: just occupy your mind and body, and stay in touch with people through other means."

"I'm doing that."

"How often do you work out?"

"I can't go to the gym. Push ups only get you so far."

"There is so much more you can do at home than just push ups. You can exercise your entire body. You just may need to get a bit creative."

"Like how?"

"Like, do pull ups on an open door that's wedged into place. Put some books into a backpack and do curls. Squats and lunges. Abs every day. Get into a routine."

"Okay. I'm keeping my mind occupied though."

"With TV?"

"And reading."

"Reading is good. Learning a new skill is better. There are tutorials online for just about everything. If you have the cash, order a guitar from somewhere that's still doing deliveries and teach yourself to play it. Find websites with puzzles to do. Seek out things that will challenge you, and do those things."

"And this is what you're doing?"

"It's all about routine. Every day I do my job, and I have times when I practice guitar, work out, talk to friends online, like we're doing now... it's all automatic for me, it just happens. I've been doing it for so long that it's just a daily routine. And sometimes I play video games."

"But what about everything I can't do any more? Like go to the gym, go out drinking, hang out in the park, go to a baseball game?"

"Getting into a new routine will take care of all that. You miss that stuff because you're still fixated on it. You're so focused on how things used to be, that you aren't able to see what's in front of you right now, and all the opportunity it presents to you."

"Opportunity for what?"

"To find the next thing you'll love doing. Right now you have nothing but time, and a wealth of knowledge at your disposal. You have the means and opportunity to get started doing literally anything. Don't view it as being stuck indoors, view it as having nothing but free time with which to better yourself."

"Is that what you're doing?"

"I will be, once my work runs out. Until then, I'm bettering my bank account."

"Lucky you."

"Like I said, it's hard for me to relate to people right now."

"Do you know anyone who has it?"

"No. I know some nurses though. They tell me it's not going well. Do you?"

"I don't think so. My mom is high risk."

"As long as you all stay home and stay clean, you should be fine."

"You think hand washing is the solution?"

"I think it's part of it. If everyone would just stay home for a month, this virus would literally just die off. It's going to stick around because people can't follow instructions. This is the most boring apocalypse ever, where we can win by staying home and watching movies, and we're still messing it up. People don't deserve this planet."

"What do you think is going to happen?"

"A lot of people will die, and we won't learn anything."

"Not very optimistic."

"I go based on what's in front of me. Enough people are needlessly putting themselves at risk, on purpose, that this thing is doomed to run its course."

"Well, I hope it goes better than that."

"Me too. In the meantime, I have stupid people to kill."

"Oh, are you playing a video game?"

"Sure, let's go with that."
