"Why is your guitar so small and weird?"
"This isn't a guitar, it's a mandolin."
"What is a mandolin guitar?"
"No, I mean it's not a guitar at all. It's a mandolin. It's different."
"What, like a ukulele?"
"No, it - well, sort of. A ukulele has four strings, and a mandolin has eight strings at four pitches."
"So a mandolin is how you waste four strings?"
"No, you double the strings to make it louder, and to make it sound more interesting."
"Interesting?"
"You know, twangy."
"Guitars aren't supposed to sound twangy."
"It's not a guitar!"
"So what do you do with it?"
"You play music. Obviously."
"What kind of music?"
"Bluegrass, usually, but you can play anything with it."
"Anything?"
"Just like any other instrument."
"Name one song I know that has a mandolin."

"That's a mandolin?"
"Yeah. Here, I'll show you."
"Huh. Well I'll be."
"Yeah, it's pretty cool. I'm trying to learn as much as I can."
"How long have you had it?"
"About three weeks."
"That's not bad for three weeks."
"Thanks. I'm not that good at guitar - I can memorize and play songs, but I can't really improvise or anything - so I want to be able to do all the things on the mandolin that I can't do on the guitar."
"So that's why your fingers look like that then?"
"Yeah. It's been a while since I played my guitar regularly, so all of my calluses are gone. Need to get them back."
"I'll bet."
"Hey, you play guitar too, right? How's that going?"
"I thought you said it wasn't a guitar?"
"You know what I mean. Do you still play?"
"Not as much as I used to, but I keep myself in shape for it."
"We should play together once I've learned a bit more on this. It'll be fun."
"Yeah, that sounds fun. I'll play my guitar, and you can play your mandolin guitar."
"I will cut you."
"For real though, I'm looking forward to it. We'll jam out."
"Hey, invite Sarah too. She can bring her bass and we'll get a whole thing going. It'll be awesome."
"Sounds good."
"It sure will."
"I see what you did there. I don't like it, mando-boy."
"Yeah, whatever. I gotta get back to this though, we'll talk later."
"Sure thing. Cheers."
