"Do you know why you're here?"
"I really don't."
"You're here because you tried to kill yourself."
"I did what now?"
"You tried to kill yourself, Jason."
"Okay... except that I didn't."
"Well, what would you call it?"
"I'd call it what it was: an accident."
"Okay. Would you please walk me through the accident?"
"We're really doing this? We're really doing this. Okay, let's do this. I was making breakfast, and I had to clean the knife I was using to cut vegetables. I washed it, went to dry it on the towel hanging from the fridge, and lost my grip on it. When I caught it, it was pointed at me and I cut my wrist."
"And then what happened?"
"Then I covered it and called for help. My dad drove me to the hospital."
"The cut on your wrist was over an inch long, directly up a vein."
"Yes it was."
"You expect me to believe that that happened by accident?"
"I don't really care what you believe. It was an accident."
"This type of injury typically only appears when someone is trying to end their life."
"While making breakfast."
"Well-"
"I was making breakfast twenty feet away from my father, and as soon as it happened I told him I needed help. Does that really sound like someone who's suicidal?"
"Are you saying you've never had a suicidal thought?"
"Of course I have. Everyone has. But this wasn't that."
"Then what was this?"
"I told you already: it was an accident. Nothing more."
"An accident that perfectly split your vein in exactly the way that someone who wanted to kill themself would do."
"Apparently, yes."
"You can see how this story is difficult to believe, yes?"
"Again, I don't care what you believe. I'm not suicidal, and even if I was, that's not how I'd do it."
"You've thought about how you would kill yourself?"
"Who hasn't? Cutting open your wrist is for losers with no creativity. If I was going to kill myself, I'd make sure that everyone knew what had happened. It would make headlines."
"So tell me, how would you kill yourself if you were going to?"
"I'd jump out of an airplane, with no parachute, and I'd make sure I landed head first, to spike myself into the ground. And I'd make sure people were filming it. It would be a grand spectacle that would take over the world."
"People don't usually care about suicides. Even dramatic ones."
"They'd care about mine. I'm a public figure, you see."
"I've never heard of you before."
"Sure you have. You just don't know it. I'm very famous."
"I see."
"I also lied to you earlier. I'm sorry about that."
"What did you lie about?"
"I lied when I said it was an accident that I cut myself."
"So you cut yourself on purpose?"
"I did. But it wasn't a suicide attempt. That part was the truth."
"Why did you cut yourself then?"
"Why, to get close to you."
"I'm sorry?"
"I knew that if they thought I'd attempted suicide, they would send me to you for counselling. This is exactly where I want to be."
"You want to be in counselling for attempting suicide?"
"No, don't be silly. I want to be in this room with you."
"I'm... why?"
"Doctor Quigly... because you're next."
"I'm next how?"
"Well, there was Doctor Newcomb, he was my N - then there was Doctor Overton and Doctor Page, so next is Q. Do you know how difficult it was to find a Doctor in this city with a name beginning with Q? You're literally the only one."
"Newcomb, Overton, Page... but they're all- they killed themselves!"
"Cutting your wrist is an incredibly unimaginative way to kill yourself. But as a way to kill others... well, who would ever suspect?"
"I have assistants, appointment books, video cameras!"
"All dealt with. This isn't my first rodeo, Doctor. It's actually my seventeenth. Well, my twenty-first if you include the practice runs."
