"Hey, what's up?"
"I'm writing a story."
"Cool, what's it about?"
"I don't know."
"Well, who's the main character?"
"I don't know."
"Okay, what type of story is it? Horror, science fiction, contemporary?"
"No idea."
"So you're writing a story, but you don't know who's in it, what they do, or what the theme is?"
"That's right."
"I see a flaw in your plan."
"But I thought this is how you're supposed to write?"
"I'm not sure what you mean."
"Someone told me you can write by the seat of your pants, where you don't plan anything out, and you just let the characters do what they want to do."
"That's a way to write, yes."
"That's what I'm doing."
"So how much do you have so far?"
"A title."
"What's the title?"
" 'Story Number One' ."
"That's not much of a title."
"It's a great title. Like 'Song 2' by Blur."
"Okay, let's start from the beginning. What kind of story do you want to tell?"
"I don't know."
"You're not making this easy."
"I just want to be a writer."
"Well, all you need to do in order to be a writer is write something."
"That's what I'm trying to do."
"And how much do you have so far?"
"Story Number One."
"Okay, let me try this a different way: why do you want to be a writer?"
"For the money and fame."
"I think your expectations might be a little high."
"What do you mean? Michael Crichton, Stephen King, George R. R. Martin, they all got famous and rich by writing."
"Those three are exceptions. For most people, writing doesn't pay the bills. Most of your favourite writers have day jobs."
"But I'll be the exception too."
"What makes you say that?"
"Because I'm exceptional."
"Look, if you're only getting into it for the money, you're going to be disappointed. People don't become writers to be rich, they become writers because they have stories inside of them that they can't keep in. They write because they can't not write."
"They write because they can't not write? Not writing is easy. All you have to do is nothing."
"Not writing is ignoring the story no matter how much it's begging to be let out. To a writer, the characters are real, and they have demands."
"So why don't my characters want anything from me?"
"You literally told me you don't know who your main character is."
"Yeah. Shouldn't he tell me?"
"You know what, I'll be honest with you: I think you may not be meant to become a writer."
"Maybe you're right. It's boring anyway."
"That's the spirit."
"I still want to make a lot of money fast though."
"Don't we all?"
"I guess I'll just have to start another cult."
"Wait, start another- I have so many one word questions!"
